I love the creative arts. Ever since I can remember I have been drawn to creativity and inspired by those who can make wonderful things. I love discussing creative ideas, I love a good argument about an artist or the impact of a musician. I love the passion that the arts stir up in people.
So, during this strange time when we are separated from each other, I am going to share some random thoughts and ideas about some creative works and people that have inspired me.
I won’t be doing reviews, I certainly am not qualified to judge anyone else’s work, but instead I will share how certain pieces of art have touched me.
This is a purely personal take on some beautiful/funny/sad/crazy things that have made my life so much richer. And there is so much to choose from, there are so many beautiful things out there:
- Having a good book to read, the way you slowly become engrossed in a world totally alien to you and your reality. The fact that you can be transported anywhere and learn so much about things you have never even seen.
- To wander in an art gallery, especially The National Gallery in Dublin, and even though I know very little about art, I lose myself in those beautiful rooms and hallways. I marvel at the pure genius of a painting that hangs there inviting you into a by-gone age.
- A great movie is something I also enjoy, and a great movie of almost every genre. It’s a bit sad I suppose, but I can watch a favourite several times and still enjoy it as if for the first time. To me movies are the ultimate in escapism and who can tell me that a little bit of escapism isn’t a good thing? Especially in these difficult times.
- But, most of all, I love music. It moves me, it transports me. Music has a way of touching some inner part of me I just don’t understand. I have my favourite types of music, naturally, but I can enjoy almost anything. Almost. I don’t think I could live in a world without music.
Maybe some of you out there would like to join in and share your sources of inspiration?
Maybe we can focus on some of the beautiful things in life to help us to feel better and to connect with each other in a new way?
